The building was built in just 14 months during the Great Depression, it was the tallest building in the world from its completion in 1931 until the World Trade Center was completed in 1972, and was again New York City's tallest building from 2001 until 2013 after the World Trade Center was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.[6][7]
