Jazz rap, also known as Jazz hip hop or Jazz hop, is a musical genre that mixes jazz and hip hop. It is also a subgenre of alternative hip hop.[1] It arose during the late 1980s in the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. The rhythm is rooted in hip hop,[1] layered with repeated phrases from jazz instruments such as trumpet, double bass, etc. Groups involved in creating jazz rap included A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, De La Soul, Gang Starr, The Roots, Jungle Brothers, and Dream Warriors.[1]
