Jelena Noura Hadid (born April 23, 1995), also known as Gigi Hadid, is an American supermodel and television personality. In November 2014, Hadid made her debut in the Top 50 Models ranking at Models.com.[8] She has appeared on the covers of international Vogue at least 50 times.[9] Models.com ranks her among the "New Supers."[10] Since 2017, Hadid has been one of the world's highest-paid models, earning $20 million.[11][12]

She was the partner of English singer Zayn Malik since late 2015 until 2021. She has a daughter with Malik, Khai (born September 19, 2020).[13][14]

Early years

Jelena Noura Hadid was born on April 23, 1995,[15] in Los Angeles, California, to Palestinian-American real estate developer Mohamed Hadid and Dutch-American former model Yolanda Hadid (née van den Herik).[16][17] Through her father, she claims descent from Zahir Al-Umar, Prince of Nazareth and Sheik of Galilee.[18][19]

Hadid has two younger siblings, Bella and Anwar Hadid, who are also models.[3] She also has two older sisters, Marielle and Alana Hadid.[15][4] She and her siblings were raised on a ranch in Santa Barbara before moving to Beverly Hills after ten years.[20][21]

Her nickname "Gigi" was first used by her mother in the Netherlands and became her school nickname to avoid confusion with another student named Helena.[22]

Career

1997-2012: Early work

Hadid began modeling at two years old after being discovered by Guess co-founder Paul Marciano.[23] She appeared in Baby Guess ads before taking a break to focus on school.[24] She returned to modeling in 2011 and became the face of a 2012 Guess campaign. As an adult, she has done three campaigns with Guess.[25][26]

2013-2016: Breakthrough

Hadid signed with IMG Models in 2013 and made her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2014, walking for Desigual.[27][28] That same month, she appeared on the cover of Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book.[29] In July 2014, she starred in Tom Ford’s eyewear campaign alongside Patrick Schwarzenegger.[30] She also co-hosted the Daily Front Row’s Fashion Media Awards in New York City in September 2014.[31] Hadid has appeared in multiple campaigns for Tom Ford, including F/W 2014, Velvet Orchard Fragrance, and Tom Ford Beauty.[32][33] She was also featured on the cover of Galore magazine in 2014.[34][35][36]

In 2015, Hadid appeared in the Pirelli Calendar and became the brand ambassador for the Australian swimwear label Seafolly.[37] She was named Model of the Year by the Daily Front Row and a Maybelline ambassador.[38] That same year, she walked for top designers and brands like Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Max Mara. She has frequently appeared with her sister Bella Hadid.

Hadid has appeared on the covers of several international editions of Vogue, as well as Schön!, Numéro, Allure, W Magazine, Teen Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, Elle (Canada), Dazed, and Harper's Bazaar.[39][40][41][42] She has also shot editorials for VMAN, Elle (U.S.), Grazia, Cleo, Sports Illustrated, Paper, Vanity Fair, and V Magazine. Hadid has starred in campaigns for brands like Guess, Versace, Penshoppe, Balmain, Topshop, Max Mara, and Stuart Weitzman.[43][44][45]

In 2016, Hadid walked for top designers and brands including Versace, Chanel, Fendi, and Marc Jacobs.[46][47][48][49] She became the global brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger, appearing in campaigns for their undergarments, apparel, and fragrances. She also starred in an interactive BMW M2 campaign and hosted the iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards in Toronto.[50][51] Hadid co-designed a capsule collection with Tommy Hilfiger called Gigi by Tommy Hilfiger, released at New York Fashion Week.[52] During the Fall 2016 Fashion Weeks, she opened five shows and closed seven.[53] She also launched a boot collection for Stuart Weitzman and became a Reebok ambassador for their #PerfectNever campaign.[54][55]

Hadid co-hosted the American Music Awards in November 2016 but faced backlash for an impression, for which she later apologized.[56][57] In December 2016, she won the International Model of the Year award at the British Fashion Awards.[58]

2017-present: Further recognition and brand collaborations

Hadid kicked off the Spring/Summer season by starring in campaigns for Fendi and Moschino.[59] She was also the face of Max Mara accessories, Stuart Weitzman, and DSQUARED2 for their S/S 2017 campaigns.[60][61] In February 2017, she launched her second ready-to-wear collection with Tommy Hilfiger.[62] That summer, she photographed a special edition of V Magazine called Gigi's Journal, featuring Polaroids of her friends and fashion industry colleagues.[63]

In March 2017, Hadid appeared on four Vogue covers: American, British, Chinese, and the first-ever Vogue Arabia.[64][65][66][67] She was also on the Spring/Summer 2017 covers of CR Fashion Book, Jolie (April), and the Daily Front Row.[68][69][70] In May, she featured on the Dutch editions of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour, and appeared on the June/July 2017 cover of American Harper's Bazaar.[71][72] She also starred in editorials for American Vogue (April 2017) and LOVE Magazine (Spring/Summer 2017).

The third Tommy Hilfiger and Hadid collection was launched in September 2017.[73] During the Fall/Winter 2017 Fashion Month in New York, Milan, and Paris, she opened shows for designers like Jeremy Scott, Anna Sui, Versus (Versace), Alberta Ferretti, Missoni, H&M, and Balmain, and closed shows for Isabel Marant, Moschino, Max Mara, and Anna Sui. She also released new collaborations with Vogue Eyewear and Messika Jewelry.[71] Hadid won Best Design Debut at the Daily Front Row's Fashion Los Angeles Awards for her work with Tommy Hilfiger.[74] She ended the year by being named one of Glamour's Women of the Year.[75]

Hadid began 2018 with high fashion campaigns for Valentino, Moschino, Versace, and Fendi. She also released her second collaborations with Vogue Eyewear and Messika Jewelry.[76] In February, she launched the fourth and final season of her Tommy Hilfiger capsule collection during Milan Fashion Week.[77][78]

That year, she appeared on several international Vogue covers, including British Vogue (March), Vogue Italia (May), and Vogue Brazil (September).[79][80] She also landed American covers like Harper's Bazaar (May), V Magazine (Fall Preview V114), and W Magazine.[81][82] Additionally, she appeared on the 10th Anniversary edition of LOVE Magazine, Chaos 69, and Chaos True Originals – Disney Special.[83]

In November 2018, Hadid announced her first collaboration with Reebok, designing sneakers. The limited release came in December, with the full collection launching in February 2019.[84] In early 2019, she appeared on several international Vogue covers, including Vogue Czechoslovakia, Vogue Arabia, and Vogue Hong Kong.[76]

In October 2019, Hadid appeared on the Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay, where she teamed up with chef Anne Burrell to face Bobby Flay. The episode aired in June 2020.[85] She also guest-starred in Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, which aired on October 1, 2020.[86]

In August 2022, she announced the launch of her first solo clothing line, Guest in Residence.[87][88][89] In 2023, Hadid co-hosted the fashion competition show Next In Fashion with Tan France, which premiered on Netflix on March 3, 2023.[90][91]

On June 23, 2024, Hadid played a prominent role in Vogue World 2024, a grand event held at Place Vendôme in Paris to celebrate 100 years of French fashion and sport.[92] She opened the equestrian-themed segment riding horseback in Hermès, and later closed the show wearing a custom Balmain outfit designed by Olivier Rousteing.[92][93] The outfit featured a gold bustier and a flowing electric blue skirt, symbolizing French heritage and Balmain's signature color.[92]
