Butare

Butare, also known as Huye, is a city in the Southern Province of Rwanda. It is the capital of Huye District. As of the 2022 census, 75,000 people lived there.

The National University of Rwanda and Butare Airport are in Butare.
History
Butare was founded by the Belgian colonial rulers in the 1920s under the name Astrida, in honor of Queen Astrid of the Belgians.[2] The government of Rwanda changed the name of the city when it gained independence in 1962.[3]
