There are more than 18,000 Burger King restaurants world-wide in 100 countries, and almost all of them are franchises.[6] But in Australia, since the name "Burger King" was already trademarked there, BK franchises there are called Hungry Jack's.

Burger King is owned mostly by 3G Capital, a Brazilian investment company. But it is also owned by shareholders and used to publicly trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BKW.[7] In 2014, the chain's operations was merged with that of Tim Hortons from Canada, under the name Restaurant Brands International (NYSE: QSR).[8] Burger King is an American global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants. Headquartered in the unincorporated area of Miami-Dade County, Florida, the company was founded in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida–based restaurant chain.
