Avalon Park is an area on the south side of the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the city's 77 official community areas and a park. Boundaries are 76th St. to the north, South Chicago Ave. to the east and 87th St. to the south.[1]
Avalon Park had a major demographic change in the 1960s. In the 1960 census, Avalon Park was 0% African American (only six of 12,710 residents). A decade later, Avalon Park was 83% African American, according to the 1970 census.
A sewer system was created in 1910. It helped to drain the area and make further development easier.[2]
