James La Rue Avery, Sr. (November 27, 1945 – December 31, 2013) was an American actor. He was born in Virginia and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was best known for his role on the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.[1] He played father and lawyer Philip Banks, Will Smith's character's uncle. He was also the voice of Shredder in the 1987 cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Avery died from problems after open-heart surgery in a hospital in Los Angeles. He was aged 68.[1][2][3]
