Iwo Jima (硫黄島, meaning "sulfur island"), also known as Iō-tō,[1] is an uninhabited Japanese island in the Volcano Islands. It is south of the Bonin Islands. It is 650 nautical miles (750 mi; 1,200 km) south of mainland Tokyo.[2]
The first recorded mention of Iwo Jima was in 1673.[2]
It was claimed by the Empire of Japan in 1861.[2]
The island is best known as the focus of the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.[2]
