The city has a military history dating back to the Roman times. Its fortifications were extended and strengthened in the 15th century and throughout the history of the Kingdom of Naples (later the Two Sicilies). The 1st-century mausoleum of Lucius Munatius Plancus stands at the top of Monte Orlando. Its Ancient Roman name was Caieta.

Today, Gaeta is a fishing port, tourist resort and NATO naval base.
