The club was founded in 1989.^[4]

In 2010, Machida Zelvia formed a partnership with Major League Soccer's D.C. United. This was the first partnership between a Japanese football club and American soccer club.^[5]

In 2012, the club was promoted to the J.League in its second division.^[6]
