The Chechens (/ˈtʃɛtʃɛnz, tʃəˈtʃɛnz/;[18] Chechen: Нохчий, Noxçiy, Old Chechen: Нахчой, Naxçoy) are an indigenous Caucasian ethnic group native to the North Caucasus who refer to themselves as Nokhchiy (pronounced [no̞xtʃʼiː]; singular Nokhchi, Nokhcho, Nakhchuo or Nakhtche). The vast majority of Chechens are Muslim and they adhere to the Sunni branch of Islam. Chechens live in Chechnya, a Caucasian republic of Russia.
