Richardson je bio u braku sa poznatom glumicom Vanessom Redgrave, koja mu je rodila dvije kćeri - Natashu i Joely - koje će i same postati poznate glumice. 1973. je dobio kćer iz vanbračne veze sa sekretaricom Grizeldom Grimond. Osim veza sa žena je imao veze sa muškarcima, a biseksualnost je priznao nedugo pred smrt od posljedica zaraze HIV-om.^[1][2]
