István Szabó (18. februar 1938 -) je mađarski scenarist, filmski i operni režiser, koji se smatra najpoznatijim mađarskim sineastom od 1960-ih. Stekao je reputaciju filmskog autora i umjetnika zahvaljujući nizu filmova koji se bave burnom historijom Centralne Evrope u 20. vijeku i etičkim dilemama koju su tadašnje političke okolnosti stavljale pred pojedince. Svjetsku je slavu početkom 1980-ih stekao sa filmom Mefisto koji je nagrađen Oscarom za najbolji strani film. Otada je u pravilu snimao filmove u međunarodnim koprodukcijama, na raznim jezicima i raznim lokacijama.
