Sisian (Armenie: Սիսիան) - a ceety in the soothren province o Syunik, Armenie. Umwhile kent as Sisakan an aw, till 1935 it wis namit Karakilise, in 1935 wis namit Sisavan, in 1940 Sisian.[2] Locatit on baith banks o Vorotan River, 6 km sooth o the Yerevan-Meghri heich-gate, at a distance o 217 km frae Yerevan an 115 km frae Kapan. Sisian forms an urban commonty (municipality). The Naitional Statistical Service o the Republic o Armenie (ARMSTAT) reportit its population wis 16,735 in 2010,[3] doun frae 16,843 at the 2001 census.[4]

Etymologie
The aurie o modren-day Sisian wis cried Sisakan durin auncient historical periods an aw. Accordin tae Movses Khorenatsi, the name o Sisakan -an subsequently Sisian- wis derivit frae Sisak,[5] a legendary ancestor o the Armenie princely hoose o Syuni.[6]

Historically, the territory o modren Sisian wis pairt o Tseghuk canton (Armenie: Ծղուկք գաւառ Tsghukk gavar), at the hert o the auncient province o Syunik, athin Armenie Major. Durin the 4t century, the nearbi historic dounset o Shaghat became the residence o the princes an the releegious leaders o Syunik. It remained the spiritual an the poleetical centre o the region till the end o the 10t century, when the fortifee'd toun o Kapan in Baghk canton wis selectit as caipital o the newly established Kinrick o Siwnik.[7]
