The ceety's name is made up o twa kanji, 静—shizu, meanin "still" or "calm"; an 岡—oka, meanin "hill(s)".[2] In 1869, Shizuoka Domain wis first creatit oot o the aulder Sunpu Domain, an that name wis retained whan the ceety wis incorporatit in 1885. In 2003, Shizuoka merged wi Shimizu Ceety (nou Shimizu Waird), briefly becoming the mucklemaist ceety bi land area in Japan. In 2005, it became ane o Japan's 19 "designatit ceeties".
