The regional unit covers the eastren pairt o the agglomeration o Athens, an the rural aurie tae its east an aw.

The regional unit East Attica is subdividit intae 13 municipalities. These are (number as in the map in the infobox):[1]
As a pairt o the 2011 Kallikratis govrenment reform, the regional unit East Attica wis creatit oot o the umwhile prefectur East Attica (Greek: νομαρχία Ανατολικής Αττικής). The prefectur haed the same territory as the present regional unit. At the same time, the municipalities wur reorganisit, accordin tae the table belaw.[1]

The prefectur o East Attica wis subdividit intae three provinces: the Province o Marathon (caipital Marathon), the Province o Mesogia (capital Koropi), an the Province o Lavriotiki (caipital Lavrio). They wur abolished afore the Kallikratis programme came intae effect.
