Geography

Diyala Province stends tae the northeast o Baghdad as far as the mairch wi Iran. Its caipital is Baqubah. It kivers an aurie o 17,685 square kilometre (6,828 sq mi).

A muckle portion o the province is drained bi the Diyala River, a major tributary o the Tigris. Acause o its proximity tae twa major soorces o watter, Diyala's main industry is agricultur, mainly dates grown in muckle shaws. The province conteens ane o the mucklest olive shaws in the Middle East.[4] It is recognized as the oranger caipital o the Middle East an aw. The Hamrin Muntains passes through the govrenorate.

Population

In 2003, it haed an estimatit population o some 1,224,000 fowk. Iraqi Arabs comprise aboot 82 percent o the govrenorate, Iraqi Kurds aboot 16 percent (feckly in the Khanaquin an Kifri Destricts), an Iraqi Turkmen aboot 2 percent.[5] Aroond 75% o the population stey in the major ceeties: Baqubah, Muqdadiyah an Khanaqin.[6]
