North Kosovska Mitrovica is the northren pairt o the ceety o Mitrovica, which the river Ibar divides frae the rest o the ceety. It is a pairt an de facto caipital o North Kosovo, a region wi an ethnic Serb majority that functions lairgely autonomously frae the remainder o the ethnic-Albanie-majority Kosovo an acts as the region's caipital. It covers 1/5 o Kosovska Mitrovica an haes a population o ower 22,000 fowk o whom 19,000 are Serbs, 2,000 Albanies an 1,000 ither minorities.[1]

North Kosovska Mitrovica currently represents the maist important poleetical, educational an health centers for Serbs in Kosovo. It is the lairgest urban aurie in Kosovo whare Serbs are the ethnic majority. In the ceety the University o Pristina is locatit, which is unner war circumstances relocatit frae Pristina tae Kosovska Mitrovica an which is the anerlie University where Serbs and other Slavic speakers are able tae attend schuilin in Kosovo. Also, there is a Clinical Center, which is the anerlie health center for Serbs in Kosovo.[2]
In 2013, efter November elections in Kosovo, North Kosovska Mitrovica offeecially became a separate municipality.
