The destrict wis established bi mergin the umwhile destricts o Döbeln, Freiberg an Mittweida as pairt o the destrict reform o August 2008.
The destrict stretches frae the Erzgebirge ("Ore Muntains") on the Czech Republic–Germany border tae the plains atween Leipzig an Dresden. The main rivers o the destrict are the Freiberger Mulde an Zschopau. The destrict borders (from the west and clockwise) the state Thuringie, the destricts o Leipzig, Nordsachsen, Meißen, Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, the Czech Republic, Erzgebirgskreis, the urban destrict Chemnitz, an the destrict o Zwickau.
