Mashhad (Hebrew: מַשְׁהַד, Arabic: مشهد, Mash-hed transliteration, grave o a holy man) is an Arab toun locatit 5 kilometer (3.1 mi) northeast o Nazareth in Israel's North Destrict. Accordin tae the Israeli Central Bureau o Statistics, the toun haed a population o 6,700 maistly Muslim inhabitants.[1][2]

Mashhad became a local cooncil in 1960. The toun is said tae be the steid o Jonah's grave [2] an his birthplace (2 Keengs 14:25), cried Gath-Hefer in Biblical times, a veelage in the tribe o Zebulun (Joshua 19:13).
