Cotignola borders the follaein municipalities: Bagnacavallo, Bagnara di Romagna, Faenza, Lugo, Solarolo. It is mentioned for the first time in 919 (as Cotoniola) an wis later the fief o the coonts o Cunio, who haed a castle in Barbiano. In the 15t century it wis ruled bi the Sforza, then bi the Este an, frae 1598, it wis pairt o the Papal States.
