Филология, гр. φίλος приятель, λόγος слово — наука, котрой цѣльов е познаня духа дакотрого народа на основѣ его языка и литературы або и устной творчости.[1]
Люде, котры ся занимають филологиев, называють ся филолог або филологичка.
Предметом филологии може быти даяка языкова група, або и каждый язык сам. Роздѣляють окреме тыж понятя филологии класичной, в котре входять языкы и литературы старовѣку и филологии модерной, ку котрой належать филология славянска, романска, германска, ориентална и т. п. Окремы групы, правда же, можуть еще дале ся роспадати на узшы, напримѣр ориентална на филологию китайску, манджу, японску, иранску, индийску а т. д.[1]
Понятя филологии доста широке, кедь мать обсяговати вшитко, што ся дотыкать языка и литературы дакотрого народа. Тото вшакже е цѣлком можне лем при языках мертвых, в класичной филологии. Филология живых языкох не може быти так вычерпна и мусить ся ограничити на язык и литературу в узшом вызнамѣ, лишаючи розличны дотычны ку ним темы окремым самостойным наукам.[1]
