Размеры динозавров являются одной из самых интересных особенностей этой группы животных для учёных, СМИ и общественности. Динозавры демонстрируют необычные вариации в своих габаритах — их масса могла составлять от 164 граммов (Epidexipteryx) до 70 тонн (Argentinosaurus)[1][2][3][4].
Текущие данные свидетельствуют о том, что средний размер динозавров менялся на протяжении всего их существования[5].
Завроподы имели самые большие параметры среди всех динозавров. Гигантские доисторические млекопитающие, такие как Indricotheriumи Palaeoloxodon (самые крупные наземные млекопитающие[6]) были невелики по сравнению с гигантскими зауроподами. Только современные киты могут соперничать в размерах с этими динозаврами[7].
Один из самых высоких и тяжёлых динозавров, известных по более или менее полным скелетам — Giraffatitan brancai. Его остатки были обнаружены в Танзании между 1907 и 1912 годами. Животные достигали 12 метров в высоту, их длина составляла 21,8—22,5 метров, а масса 30—60 тонн[8][9]. Один из самых длинных динозавров — Diplodocus hallorum, обнаруженный в штате Вайоминг в США и изначально описанный под названием сейсмозавр[10].
Известны и динозавры бо́льших размеров, но их реконструкции основаны исключительно на фрагментарных окаменелостях. Один из самых крупных известных завропод — аргентинозавр, длиной до 39,7 метров[11].
