Megabit este utilizat în mod obișnuit pentru a indica ratele de transfer de date în rețelele de calculator sau sisteme de telecomunicații. De exemplu, viteza conexiunii într-un server sau lățimea de bandă a acestuia, este exprimată în Mbit/s (megabit pe secundă).
