Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w południowym Meksyku i Ameryce Centralnej[3].
Długość ciała 15–19 cm; masa ciała 24,8–43 g[4].
Etymologia
Melozone: gr. μηλον mēlon – policzek; ζωνη zōnē – pas[5][6].
Podział systematyczny
Część gatunków (albicollis, fusca, crissalis, aberti, kieneri) przeniesiono do rodzaju Kieneria[7]. Do rodzaju należą następujące gatunki[8]:
- Melozone biarcuata – ziemnołuszcz białolicy
- Melozone cabanisi – ziemnołuszcz kostarykański – takson wyodrębniony ostatnio z M. biarcuata[9][10][11]
- Melozone leucotis – ziemnołuszcz białouchy
