Los australopitècs[1] (Australopithecus) (del latin australis 'del sud' e del grèc πίθηκος pithekos 'monard') forman un genre atudat de primats ominids. Visquèt en Africa fa entre 4 milions e 2 de milions d'ans, del Zanclean (Pliocèn Inferior) al Gelasian (Pleistocèn Inferior). La màger novetat aportada pels australopitècs es que se desplaçavan de manièra bipèda. La talha del sieu cervèl èra similara al dels grands monins actuals. Vivián dins las zònas tropicalas d'Africa, en s'alimentant de frucha e de fuèlhas.
