Sophia-universitetet (japansk: 上智大学, Jōchi daigaku) er et katolsk universitet i Japan, med hovedcampus i bydelen Yotsuya i Tokyos Chiyoda-distrikt.

I 1906 gav pave Pius X jesuittordenen i oppdrag å etablere et universitet i Tokyo, og tre jesuitter dro to år etter til Japan med dette for øye. Sophia-universitetet ble så grunnlagt i 1913 som det første katolske universitetet i Japan.[1] Det har vokst fra et ganske lite lærested til et stort og velrenommert universitet, fordelt på fire campuser i Tokyo-området, med 12 575 studenter og ni fakulteter (2017).[2][3]
Universitetets engelske navn kommer fra det greske ordet sofia som betyr visdom. Det japanske Jōchi daigaku betyr ordrett «universitet for høyere visdom».[4]
Skolen ble reorganisert som fullverdig universitet i 1928, men kan trekke trådene helt tilbake til St. Frans Xavier kom til Japan i 1549.[5] Xavier uttrykte da et håp om en dag å kunne grunnlegge et universitet i Japans hovedstad. En statue av Frans Xavier står foran hovedbygningen på Ichigaya-campusen.
I 1949 etablerte universitetet sitt første program med engelsk som undervisningsspråk.[2]
