Kidmans foreldrene var dr. Antony David Kidman og Janelle Ann (født MacNeille). Hennes far var spesialist på kreftforskning i Washington D.C.. Familien returnerte til Australia da hun var fire år gammel og faren tok en lærepost ved University of Technology, Sydney.

I 2008 spilte Kidman hovedrollen i musikalen Nine sammen med Oscar-vinnerne Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench og Sophia Loren med Oscar-nominerte Kate Hudson og Grammy Award-vinner Fergie i biroller. Filmen hadde premiere i november 2009.^[12]

I 2017 hadde hun også en av hovedrollene i miniserien Big Little Lies.

Under Oscar 2003 vant Kidman Oscar for beste kvinnelige hovedrolle for innsatsen i The Hours. Hun ble også nominert i samme kategori til Oscar 2011. Kidman har fått en stjerne på Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hun er companion (AC) av Order of Australia.

Kidman har vært gift med Tom Cruise, som hun ble skilt fra i 2001. Med Cruise har hun adoptivbarna Isabella Jane (født 1992) og Connor Anthony (født 1995). Den 25. juni 2006 giftet Kidman seg med countrysangeren Keith Urban, og de har døtrene Sunday Rose (født 2008) og Faith Margaret (født 2010).
