Chaetoceros

Chaetoceros er trolig den største gruppen av marine planktoniske kiselalger med omtrent 400 arter beskrevet. En stor andel av disse er riktignok ikke vitenskapelig aksepterte. Det er ofte vanskelig å skille de forskjellige Chaetoceros artene fra hverandre, noe som leder til at feilidentifisering er ganske utbredt.^[1] I tillegg har det blitt gjort mange forsøk på å restrukturere denne store gruppen, men dette arbeidet er langt fra ferdig^[2][3] Mesteparten av forskningen som har blitt gjort på denne verdensomspennende gruppen har vært konsentrert i boreale områder, dermed er det trolig et stort antall tropiske arter som enda ikke har blitt beskrevet.^[4]

Beskrivelse

Gruppen Chaetoceros ble først beskrevet av Ehrenberg i 1844.
Cellene er mer eller mindre rektangulære sett ovenfra, og litt mer ovale sett fra siden.
Setaene til celler i kjede er sammenføyde ved utgangspunktet til setaene.
