Byen er administrativt senter i Vologda oblast. Innbyggertallet var 301 755 ved folketellingen i 2010. Vologda har fått sitt navn, som trolig er av finsk-ugrisk opprinnelse, fra elva Vologda som renner gjennom byen.
Vologda er en viktig industriby og jernbaneknutepunkt. I byen produseres blant annet jernbaneutstyr, jordbruksmaskiner, tekstiler, glass og sement. Vologda er også kjent for sine oster og smør, som mange anser som Russlands beste.
Vologda ble først nevnt i Novgorods krøniker fra 1147, da Sankt Gerasim fant at det allerede var en kirke og en landsby på stedet, som var omgitt av ugjennomtrengelige skoger. Stedet var bosatt av novgorodere som dro skip fra en av Volgas sideelver over til en sideelv til Nordre Dvina, og derved gjorde det mulig å seile fra Kvitsjøen til Det kaspiske hav. I 1273 ble byen plyndret av et mongolsk raid.
Det var ikke før i 1412, da området ble avstått av Novgorod-republikken til Storfyrstedømmet Moskva, at byen oppnådde en grad av betydning. Moskva-fyrstene gjorde Vologda til sin utpost mot nord, og ved slutten av århundret hadde Vologda overskygget regionens gamle sentrum, Belozersk. Byens kommersielle betydning økte ytterligere da det engelske Muscovy Company startet sin virksomhet i Russland.
Det var på denne tid at Ivan den grusomme beordret at byens katedral skulle bygges på nytt i stein. Vologdas St. Sofia-katedral, innviet i 1570, var på den tid en av de største katedralene som hadde blitt bygget i Russland. Dens praktfulle freskoer ble malt i 1686–1688 av Dmitrij Plekhanov fra Jaroslavl. Et høyreist åttekantet klokketårn ble bygget i 1654–1659 og forhøyet på 1800-tallet.
Bare to kilometer fra Vologdas historiske sentrum står Spaso-Prilutskijklosteret, grunnlagt i 1371 av en av Sergij Radonezjskij's disipler. Med Dmitrij Donskoj som sin beskytter utviklet klosteret seg raskt til områdets største landeier. Klosterets femkuplede katedral ble reist i 1537–1542. I Sovjet-tiden ble munkene forvist og klosteret omgjort til et museum. Noen bemerkelsesverdige eksempler på tidlig trearkitektur ble fraktet hit fra fjerne landsbyer i Vologda-regionen.
