Den blir 25–40 mm lang. Skallet er trekantet med varierende farge. Det typiske sebramønstret med mørke striper på lys bakgrunn vises best hos unge eksemplarer. Eldre individer er ofte ensfarget brune.
Leveviset minner om blåskjell; den fester seg til underlaget med byssustråder og lever av partikler som filtreres ut av vannet. Arten lever for det meste i ferskvann, der den finnes i dammer, innsjøer og elver. Den kan også leve i brakkvann med opptil 6 ‰ saltholdighet.
Sebramusling hører hjemme i området ved Svartehavet og Det kaspiske hav, men begynte allerede tidlig på 1800-tallet å spre seg i Europa gjennom kanalsystemene og finnes nå i nesten hele verdensdelen. I 1988 ble det første nordamerikanske funnet gjort i den canadiske delen av De store sjøer. Den er etablert i Mälaren i Sverige siden 1920-tallet, men er ennå ikke funnet i Norge.
Invasjon av sebramusling fører til store endringer i de akvatiske økosystemene. Den opptrer i så store mengder at den fortrenger andre arter. Filtreringen er så effektiv at de fysiske egenskapene til vannforekomstene endres. Den gjør også skade ved å tette igjen utslippsledninger og inntak for kjølevann. I Fremmedartslista regnes sebramusling som en dørstokkart, og den er plassert i kategorien svært høy risiko.[2] Arten er tatt med i Verdens naturvernunions liste over de 100 mest skadelige invaderende artene i verden.[3]
