Nukunonu er en av de tre atollene som utgjør det selvstyrte nyzealandske territoriet Tokelau i det sørlige Stillehavet.

Nukunonu ligger mellom Atafu, den nordligste atollen i Tokelau, og Fakaofo lengst sør. Atollen har en landmasse på 4,7 km², der 2,65 km² egner seg til dyrking av kokospalmer og andre trær. Lagunen er på 109 km².[1] Det er kraftig nedbør. Ferskvannsforsyningen er vanskelig.
Atollen er lukket og uten dype passasjer mot havet, slik at det er vanskelige ankrings- og havneforhold.[2]
Nukunonu ble først kolonisert av polynesiere som kom fra andre øygrupper i området. Muntlige overleveringer forklarer at samfunnsforholdene som eksisterte på 1800-tallet, kom til som følge av strid mellom befolkningen på de ulike atollene, der Fakaofo til slutt gikk seirende ut.[3]
Tokelau ble først kjent for europeere fra andre halvdel av 1700-tallet. Under søk etter mytteristene på «Bounty» fikk HMS «Pandora» og kaptein Edward Edwards Nukunonu i syne i 1791.[4][5] Den første nærmere undersøkelse og beskrivelse kom etter at United States Exploring Expedition besøkte atollene i 1841.[6][3]
Katolske misjonærer til Nukunonu på 1860-tallet og katolisismen ble innført på Nukunonu som følge av kontakten med Uvea.[6]
Da peruanske slaveskip i 1863 kom til Tokelau, ble Nukunonu hardt rammet. 76 personer, over halvparten av befolkningen på 140, ble bortført og 64 personer var tilbake.[7] Folketallet steg igjen, delvis ved hjelp av innflyttere fra de andre atollene og Samoa.[8]
Nukunonu hadde i 2019 et innbyggertall på 531.[9] I 2016 var folketallet 452,[10] mens folketallet i 2013 var på 410.[11] Befolkningen på Nukunonu bor på to småøyer sørvest på atollen. Den opprinnelige bosetningen kalles Fale (landsby) og den nyere Motuhaga. De to er knyttet sammen av en betongbro. I Fale er bygningene reist ved tre hovedgater. Ala Gatai (Lagunegaten), Ala Loto (Mellomgaten) og Ala Tua (Havgaten).[12]
21 % av befolkningen var ved folketellingen i 2011 under 10 år og 31,7 % var under 15 år.[13]
Nukunonu er katolsk, med 93,9 % tilhørende Den katolske kirke i 2011.[14]
Atollen har sykehus og skole.[15]
76,2 % av innbyggerne over 15 år var i 2011 sysselsatt i lønnsarbeid.[16]
91 % av befolkningen bodde i 2011 i bolighus av europeisk type. 74,1 % av boligene hadde private dusjfasiliteter i tilknytning til boligen, mens 26 % delte dusj. 92,2 % av husholdningene hadde fryseboks, 71,4 % hadde telefon og nærmere to tredeler av husholdningene hadde radio- og fjernsynsapparat.[17]
Atollen styres av et eldsteråd, taupulega. Landsbyen har en ordfører, pulenuku, og en representant utad, faipule. De som har disse vervene er automatisk medlem av Tokelaus regjering. Nukunonu hadde i 2014 seks representanter i Tokelaus lovgivende forsamling, Fono Fakamua (engelsk: General Fono).[18]
