Distriktet ble opprettet 1. april 1974 ved at bydistriktene Baldock, Hitchin, Royston og Letchworth samt Hitchin landdistrikt ble slått sammen. Distriktet dekker et areal på 375,37 km² og hadde 127 114 innbyggere i 2011.[1]
Østfra og med klokken grenser distriktet mot East Hertfordshire, Stevenage, Welvyn Hatfield, St. Albans, South Bedfordshire, Luton, igjen mot South Bedfordshire, Mid Bedfordshire og South Cambridgeshire.
