Makhatsjkala (russisk: Махачкала́) er hovedstad (siden 1922) i den russiske republikken Dagestan, og ligger i luftlinje ca 1.600 km sør for Moskva - 1.807 km[1] på landevei. Den ligger ved vestbredden av Kaspihavet, og hadde 572.076 innbyggere i 2010.

Byen ligger på bredden av elvene Tsjerkes-ozen (russisk: Черкес-озень) og Tarnairka (russisk: Тарнаирка). Fra nordvest til sør krysses byen av kanalen Oktoberrevolusjonen (russisk: Октябрьской Революции). I byen ligger innsjøene Vuzovskoje, Ak-Gjol og Grjazevoje.
Byen er oppdelt i tre distrikter: Leninskij, Sovetskij, og Kirovskij.
Makhatsjkala ligger ca. 200 km nord for grensen mellom Russland og Aserbajdsjan. Den nærmeste by er Kaspijsk godt 20 km[2] sørøst for Makhatsjkala.
Byen ble grunnlagt i 1844 som et russisk fort, og fikk bystatus i 1857. Opprinnelig fikk byen navnet Petrovskoje, etter den russiske tsaren Peter den store som besøkte regionen i 1722. Byen ble omdøpt til Petrovsk-Port i 1857, og i 1921 Makhatsjkala etter den lokale bolsjeviklederen Makhatsj. Byten het i en korterer periode Sjamilkala under Sovjetunionens oppløsningsperiode, til ære for den dagestanske frigjøringskjemperen Sjamil (1797-1871).
Under andre verdenskrig var i Makhatsjkala krigsfangeleir nr. 379 for tyske krigsfanger.[3]
Et jordskjelv gjorde stor skade i mai 1970,[4] og en stor del av den nåværende byen er gjenoppbygd/bygd siden da.
Siden starten på krigen i Tsjetsjenia har byen vært utsatt for en rekke terrorhandlinger.
Makhatsjkala er en viktig havneby. Rørledninger fører olje fra feltene ved Groznyj og Izberbasj til byens oljeraffinerier. Byen har også romfarts-, skipsbyggings-, næringsmiddel- og tekstilindustri. Under den russiske invasjonen av Ukraina ble den viktigimporthavn for iranske militære droner, som senere ble bragt til utskytningsbaser (Primorsko Akhtarsk, Sesjtsja) nær Ukraina.[5][6]
