Baum skrev en rekke bøker og korte historier, flere under ulike pseudonymer. Mest kjent er Trollmannen fra Oz (1900).[12]
På slutten av 1800-tallet var han også en skribent i ukeavisa Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer. Her kom han med harde utfall overfor den indianske befolkningen og tok til orde for å utrydde dem i sin helhet.[13]
