Lod er en historisk by datert bak til de gamle grekerne og romertiden, og senter for Israels internasjonale hovedflyplass, Ben Gurion internasjonale lufthavn, også tidvis kjent som Lod flyplass. Flyplassen og relatert industri er den største sysselsetningskilden i Lod. Den jødiske agendas oppsamlingssenter, hovedsenteret for å ta imot aliyah-ankomster i Israel, er også lokalisert i Lod. Ifølge Israels statistiske sentralbyrå hadde Lod en befolkning på 66 800 på slutten av 2006.
