Den er det administrative senteret i Berehove rajon (distrikt), mens selve byen har status som et eget rajon i oblastet som har 23 485 innbyggere (estimat 2021).[2] Berehove var senter i Bereg fylke i kongedømmet Ungarn fram til 1919 og mellom 1938 og 1944.
Navnet har blitt skrevet på mange forskjellige måter: rumensk Bereg, russisk Берегово, Beregovo, tsjekkisk og slovakisk Berehovo, jiddisk בערעגסאז, Beregsaz, tysk Bergsaß, polsk Bereg Saski.
