Richard Hakluyt blei fødd som den andre av fire søner i Eyton i Herefordshire i 1553.[2] Far hans, som også heitte Richard Hakluyt, var medlem av lauget Worshipful Company of Skinners, som dreiv med hud- og pelshandel. Han døydde i 1557 då unger Richard var rundt fem år gammal. Enkja hans Margery[1] døydde kort tid etter. Syskenbarnet til Hakluyt, også han ein Richard Hakluyt som var advokat ved Middle Temple, blei formyndar for guten.[3]
Det skal ha vore under vitjingar og samtalr med han at Hakluyt bestemte seg for å studera kosmografi.[4]
Richard Hakluyt studerte i Oxford med støtte frå Skinners-lauget,[3] og blei seinare professor i kosmografi der. I denne stillinga innførte han globusar i engelsk skuleundervising.
I 1583 var Hakluyt med som kapellan for den engelske sendemannen sir Edward Stafford til Paris. I 1590 blei han utnemnd til sokneprest i Wetheringsett-cum-Brockford i Suffolk og i 1603 blei han vald til erkedekn i Westminster Abbey.
Han vigde livet sitt til studiet av historia til dei geografiske oppdagingane og la fram resultatet av forskinga si i fleire arbeid, blant anna i Divers Voyages Touching the Discoverie of America (1582) og hovudarbeidet sitt, The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation, som kom ut i 1598–1600, og i nytt opplag 1809–12.
I 1846 blei Hakluyt Society stifta i London. Dette selskapet gjev ut eldre reiseskildringar.
