Ei kjemisk sambinding inneheld to eller fleire atom, minst to av desse frå ulike grunnstoff, som er kjemisk bundne til kvarandre. Det nye stoffet (produktet) har andre eigenskapar enn utgangsstoffa.
I ein modell for kjemisk binding vert oktettregelen nytta. Denne går ut på at atoma deler elektron slik at dei alle får åtte valenselektron, difor er det berre edelgassane som kan framstå på eigenhand utan binding til andre atom. Dei atoma som ikkje oppfyller oktettregelen dannar binding til andre atom. Dei kan binda seg til atom av det same eller andre grunnstoff. Viss atoma er like får ein ei form av grunnstoffet. Det finst kjemiske sambindingar med fleire eller færre elektron enn oktettregelen skulle tilseia.
Ein annan måte å forklara kjemisk sambinding er å nytta orbitalteori.
Nokre eksempel på kjemiske sambindingar er vatn H2O, som består av 2 hydrogenatom og 1 oksygenatom eller monosakkarid som C6H12O6 som har 6 karbonatom 12 hydrogenatom og 6 oksygenatom.
