Hjerkinn er ei bygd i Dovre kommune i Oppland i Innlandet fylke. På Hjerkinn ligg Hjerkinn stasjon som er den høgstliggjande stasjonen på Dovrebanen[1]. På lokal dialekt (dovring) vert namnet uttala /sjærkjinn/.
Hjerkinn er ein gamal skyssstasjon med tradisjonar attende år midt på 1200-talet. Han låg ved pilegrims- og kongevegen åt Trondheim og var det høgste punktet på Dovrefjell. På 1800-talet kom det òg skulemeistar åt Hjerkinn i sesongen og staden var midtpunktet på fjellovergangen. Engelske turistar var i dette hundreåret dei fyrste som oppdaga staden og la grunnen for vidare hotelldrift her. Då jernbanene frå Oppdal og Dombås vart ferdige og knytt saman i 1921 fekk området ein ny oppsving med hotelldrift både der og på Fokstua litt lengre vest. Folldal gruvar dreiv gruvedrift på Tverrfjellet fram til 1993. Forvaret hadde eit øvingsfelt, Hjerkinn skytefelt, i nærleiken som no er i ferd med å returnerast åt naturen (2017)[2].
