Bitterdram eller berre bitter viser til krydra brennevinar som er prega av at urtene som er tilsett er lite sukkerhaldige, slik at drikken gjerne er bitter i smak. Bitterdram blei opphavleg framstilt som ein drikk med medisinske og oppkvikkande eigenskapar, også kalla eliksir.[1] Mange bitterar blir selde i miniatyrflasker på 2, 4 eller opptil 10 cl. Dei blir ofte brukt etter eit større måltid i håp om at dei skal gje betre fordøying.
Absint blei utbreidd i 1880-åra og forboden ei tid før han igjen kunne selgjast. Den opphavlege absinten inneheldt for store mengdar av giftstoffet tujon som finst i malurt.
Angostura er ein amerikansk bitter med opphav i Angostura, ein by i Bolivar-distriktet i Venezuela. Han er mest brukt som dråpevis tilsetning i drinkar og cocktailar.
Fernet Branca er basert på anis og lakrisrot, og blir ofte brukt mot «laus mage».
Ratzeputz er eut tysk krydderbrennevin smaksett med ingefær. Riga Balsam er ein lettisk bitter, som i tillegg til den tradisjonelle Gammel Dansk er særleg populær på Ærø i Danmark.[2]
Vinmonopolets bitter blei ofte brukt som «dagen derpå»-medisin. Hovudmotivet på etiketten var ein hane, og produktet blei derfor populært kalla «Kykkeliky».
