Connolly var medlem av musikkgruppa The Humblebums 1969–1970, i lag med songaren Gerry Rafferty.
Han fekk det store gjennombrotet sitt som skodespelar i filmen The Boondock Saints 1999, der han hadde rolla som «Il Duce».
Connolly blei utnemnd til Knight Bachelor i 2017,[1] og fekk dermed rett til å føra tiltaleforma sir framfor namnet sitt.
