Chaplin speelt The Pilgrim, een ontvluchte gedetineerde. Hij steelt dat de kleren van een dominee als hij aan het zwemmen is. Vervolgens vlucht hij met de trein naar Texas, waar mensen denken dat hij een geestelijke is. Hier ontmoet hij mevrouw Brown.
