နိုင်ငံတကာတွင် ပြောဆိုသော တရုတ်စကားကို မန်ဒရင် တရုတ်ဘာသာစကားဟု ခေါ်ဆိုလေ့ ရှိကြသည်။ ဟော့ကင်စကား (Hokkien)၊ ကန်တုံစကား (Cantonese)၊ တယိုချူးစကား (Teochew)၊ ဟတ်ကာစကား (Hakka)အပြင် အခြား ဒေသသုံး တရုတ်စကား အများအပြား ရှိသည်။ ဥပမာအားဖြင့် မလေးရှားနိုင်ငံ ကွာလာလမ်ပူမြို့တွင် ကန်တုံစကားကို အသုံးများကြပြီး စင်ကာပူနိုင်ငံ တွင်မူ ဟော့ကင်စကား ကို ပြောဆိုသူ အများအပြား ရှိသည်။ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတွင်မူ လက်တို နှင့် လက်ရှည် ဟု ခွဲခြား ခေါ်ဝေါ်လေ့ ရှိသည်။ လက်ရှည် ဆိုသည်မှာ အင်္ကျီလက်ရှည်ဝတ်သော ယဉ်ကျေးသော လူတို့၏ စကားဟု ညွှန်းဆိုခြင်း ဖြစ်ပြီး လက်တို စကားဆိုသည်မှာ အလုပ်သမား လူတန်းစားသုံး စကားဟု ညွှန်းဆိုခြင်း ဖြစ်သည်။
