Pertempuran Teluk Leyte, sebelum ini dikenali sebagai Pertempuran Kedua Laut Filipina, secara amnya dianggap sebagai pertempuran laut terbesar Perang Dunia II dan, oleh beberapa kriteria, mungkin pertempuran laut terbesar dalam sejarah^[4][5]

Kerugian dan korban
~3,000 mangsa korban; 1 kapal induk ringan, 2 kapal induk pengiring, 2 pembinasa, 1 pembinasa pengiring tenggelam 200+ pesawat	~12,500 terkorban; 1 pengangkut armada, 3 pengangkut ringan 3 kapal tempur, 10 kruiser, 11 pembinasa tenggelam ~300 pesawat[3]

Ia telah berlaku di perairan Teluk Leyte, berhampiran kepulauan Filipina seperti Leyte, Samar dan Luzon, dari 23–26 Oktober 1944, antara gabungan tentera Amerika dan Australia dengan Tentera Laut Imperial Jepun. Pada 20 Oktober, askar Amerika menceroboh pulau Leyte sebagai sebahagian daripada strategi yang bertujuan untuk mengasingkan Jepun dari negara-negara yang ia takluki di Asia Tenggara, dan khususnya menafikan tentera dan industri penting bekalan minyaknya. Tentera Laut Imperial Jepun (IJN) mengerah hampir kesemua saki baki kapal tentera laut utamanya dalam usaha untuk mengalahkan pencerobohan Bersekutu tetapi telah ditangkis oleh Armada Ke-3 dan Armada Ke-7 Tentera Laut A.S.. IJN gagal mencapai objektifnya, mengalami kerugian yang amat besar, dan tidak lagi bertempur dalam keadaan yang serupa selepas itu. Majoriti kapal-kapal beratnya yang masih selamat, tidak diberi bahan api, kekal di pangkalan mereka untuk keseluruhan Perang Pasifik.^[6][7]

Pertempuran ini terdiri daripada empat pertembungan berasingan di antara kuasa-kuasa yang bertentangan: Pertempuran Laut Sibuyan, Pertempuran Selat Surigao, Pertempuran Tanjung Engaño dan Pertempuran Samar, serta pertarungan-pertarungan yang lain.^[8]

Ia merupakan pertempuran pertama yang mana pesawat udara Jepun melakukan serangan teratur kamikaze.^[6][7] Pada masa pertempuran, pihak Jepun mempunyai sedikit pesawat berbanding pasukan Bersekutu yang mempunyai kapal laut, menunjukkan perbezaan kuasa di kedua-dua belah pihak pada waktu peperangan ini.^[9]
