Maggie Smith

Dame Margaret Natalie Smith CH DBE (28 Disember 1934 − 27 September 2024), lebih dikenali sebagai Maggie Smith, merupakan pelakon Inggeris yang terkenal dalam bidang filem, teater, dan televisyen. Smith membuat teater debutnya pada tahun 1952 dan mempunyai kerjaya lakonana yang amat luas dalam bidang teater, filem dan televisyen melebihi 60 tahun. Smith telah memenangi banyak anugerah untuk lakonannya, kedua-duanya untuk teater dan filem, termasuklah tujuh Anugerah BAFTA (lima anugerah bersaing dan dua anugerah khas termasuklah BAFTA Fellowship pada tahun 1996), dua Anugerah Academy, dua Anugerah Golden Globe, tiga Anugerah Emmy, dan satu Anugerah Tony.

Smith kini sedang membintangi drama bersiri popular, Downton Abbey sebagai Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, yang mana Smith telah memenangi satu Anugerah Golden Globe dan dua Anugerah Emmy untuknya.

Pada September 2012, Smith telah diberi Anugerah Legasi oleh Festival Stratford Shakespeare sebagai tanda penghormatan dan terima kasih ke atas sumbangan yang telah diberikan olehnya dalam menaikkan nama syarikat teater tersebut pada akhir 70-an. Smith menerima anugerah tersebut daripada Christopher Plummer didalam sebuah majlis di Hotel Fairmont Royal York.

Kehidupan awal

Smith dilahirkan di Ilford di Essex, kepada Nathaniel Smith, yang bekerja di Universiti Oxford, dan Margaret Hutton Little, yang merupakan orang Scotland; dia mempunyai dua orang abang kembar, Alistair dan Ian. Dia belajar di Sekolah Tinggi Oxford.

Kerjaya

Smith mempunyai banyak pengalaman dalam bidang teater langsung atau tidak langsung dan merupakan salah seorang daripada pelakon teater terunggul di England. Kerjaya lakonannya bermulai Oxford Playhouse bersama dengan Frank Shelley, dan filem pertamanya adalah pada tahun 1956. Pada tahun 1969 dia memenangi kategori Pelakon Wanita Terbaik Anugerah Academy bagi watak lakonannya dalam filem The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Sepanjang kariernya, Smith amat dikagumi kerana teknik-teknik lakonan yang hebat baik di skrin mahupun teater.

Kehidupan peribadi dan kematian

• Smith berkahwin sebanyak dua kali. Dia mengahwini Robert Stephens pada 29 Jun 1967, di Pejabat Pendaftar Greenwich Registry dan mempunyai dua orang anak lelaki iaitu Chris Larkin (lahir 1967) dan Toby Stephens (lahir 1969). Mereka bercerai pada 6 Mei 1974.

• Beliau mengahwini Beverly Cross (pada 23 Ogos 1975 di Pejabat Pendaftar Guildford dan perkahwinan itu tamat selepas kematian Cross pada 20 Mac 1998.

• Smith meninggal dunia di Hospital Chelsea dan Westminster di London, pada 27 September 2024, berusia 89 tahun.^[1] Smith telah berterus terang tentang masalah kesihatannya pada masa lalu iaitu menghidap glaukoma, penyakit Graves, dan kanser payudara.^[2]
