Beliau telah memenangi Anugerah Grammy sebanyak sepuluh kali serta juga Anugerah Akademi untuk Lagu Asal Terbaik serta Anugerah Golden Globe untuk lagu "Glory" nukilan bersama Common untuk filem Selma pada tahun 2015 He has also won ten Grammy Awards. Beliau turut memenangi Anugerah Tony 2017 atas kerjanya menghasilkan pementasan Jitney.^[1]

Stephens lahir pada 28 Disember 1978 di Springfield, Ohio.^[2] Beliau seorang daripada dalam empat adik-beradik^[3] lahir kepada Phyllis Elaine Lloyd, seorang tukang jahit, dan Ronald Lamar Stephens, seorang pekerja kilang di syarikat International Harvester.^[8]
