Katalase merupakan enzim biasa yang terdapat pada hampir keseluruhan organisma hidup yang terdedah pada oksigen, di mana ia menjadi mangkin pada penguraian hidrogen peroksida kepada air dan oksigen.[4] Katalase memiliki salah satu jumlah pusing ganti bagi semua enzim; satu molekul katalase mampu menukar 40 juta molekul hidrogen peroksida pada air dan oksigen setiap saat.[5]

Katalase merupakan protin tetramer bagi empat rantaian polipeptida, setiap satu panjang melebihi 500 asid amino.[6] It contains four porphyrin heme (iron) groups that allow the enzyme to react with the hydrogen peroxide. The optimum pH for human catalase is approximately 7,[7] and has a fairly broad maximum (the rate of reaction does not change appreciably at pHs between 6.8 and 7.5).[8] The pH optimum for other catalases varies between 4 and 11 depending on the species.[9] The optimum temperature also varies by species.[10]
