തമോദ്രവ്യം

പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ കാണാനും തൊടാനും കഴിയാത്ത രീതിയിൽ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന ദ്രവ്യത്തെയാണ് തമോദ്രവ്യം (Dark Matter) എന്ന പദം കൊണ്ട് ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ ഉൽപ്പത്തിയേയും വികാസത്തെയും കുറിച്ചുള്ള അന്വേഷണമാണ് ‘കാണാദ്രവ്യം’ എന്ന സങ്കല്പത്തിലേക്ക് ശാസ്ത്ര ലോകത്തെ നയിച്ചത്. പഠനവിധേയമാക്കിയ ഓരോ നക്ഷത്ര സമൂഹത്തിന്റെയും ഭാ‍രം അവയിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നുള്ള ആകെ ഭാ‍രത്തിലും എത്രയോ ഏറെയാണെന്ന് 1937-ൽ ഫ്രിറ്റ്സ് സ്വിക്കി എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിലെ ആകെ ദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ ഏതാണ്ട് 80 ശതമാനവും ആകെ ഊർജസാന്ദ്രതയുടെ 25 ശതമാനവും തമോദ്രവ്യം ആണെന്നു കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.^[1]

ബാരിയോണിക് അല്ലാത്ത, ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടുപിടിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ലാത്ത സാങ്കല്പികകണത്താൽ ആണ് ഇതിന്റെ നിർമിതി എന്നാണ് നിലവിലുള്ള അനുമാനം. തമോദ്രവ്യത്തെ ഇതുവരെ നേരിട്ട് നിരീക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടെല്ലെങ്കിലും താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ ചലനങ്ങളിലുള്ള പല പ്രത്യേകതകളും ഇതിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഇല്ലാതെ വിശദീകരിയ്ക്കാൻ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ്. അതിനാൽ പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിലാകമാനം തമോദ്രവ്യം കാണപ്പെടുന്നു എന്നും പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ ഉല്പത്തിയ്ക്കും വികാസത്തിനും ഇത് സാരമായ പങ്കു വഹിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും ശാസ്ത്രകാരന്മാർ വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കുന്നു. വൈദ്യുതകാന്തികതരംഗങ്ങളുമായി പ്രതിപ്രവർത്തിയ്ക്കാത്തതിനാൽ ഇവയുപയോഗിച്ചുള്ള സ്പെക്ട്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചാലും തമോദ്രവ്യം അദൃശ്യമായി തുടരുന്നു. അതിനാൽ ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിയ്ക്കാൻ വളരെ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ്.

പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിലെ പല താരാപഥങ്ങളിലും ആവശ്യത്തിന് തമോദ്രവ്യം ഇല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവയിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ കേന്ദ്രത്തെ ചുറ്റി സഞ്ചരിയ്ക്കാതെ അകന്നു പോയേനെ. പല താരാപഥങ്ങളും രൂപം കൊള്ളുകപോലും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.^[2] ഗ്രാവിറ്റേഷണൽ ലെൻസിങിന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളാണ് തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം കാണിയ്ക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു തെളിവ്.^[3] പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിലെ പശ്ചാത്തലവികിരണം, ദൃശ്യപ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ ഘടനയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ, ഗാലക്സികളുടെ രൂപീകരണവും പരിണാമവും, ഗാലക്സികളുടെ കൂട്ടിമുട്ടലുകൾ^[4], താരാപഥവ്യൂഹങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളിലെ താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ ചലനങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയവയൊക്കെ തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം വെളിവാക്കുന്ന മറ്റു തെളിവുകളാണ്.

പ്രപഞ്ചവിജ്ഞാനീയത്തിന്റെ ലാംഡ-സി.ഡി.എം മാതൃകയിൽ പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ ആകെ പിണ്ഡ-ഊർജ പരിമാണത്തിൽ 4.9% സാധാരണ ദ്രവ്യവും(ബാരിയോണിക് മാറ്റർ), 26.8% തമോദ്രവ്യവും ബാക്കി 68.3% തമോ ഊർജവും ആണ്.^[5][6][7][8] അതായത് തമോദ്രവ്യം ആകെ ദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ 84.5% ത്തോളം വരും.^{[note 1]}

തമോദ്രവ്യം ഇതുവരെ നേരിട്ട് നിരീക്ഷിയ്ക്കാൻ സാധിയ്ക്കാത്തതിനാൽ ഇത് ബാരിയോണിക് ദ്രവ്യവുമായും വൈദ്യുതകാന്തികവികിരണങ്ങളുമായും പ്രതിപ്രവർത്തനത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുന്നില്ലെന്നുവേണം കരുതാൻ. വീക്ക്ലി ഇന്ററാക്ടിങ് മാസ്സിവ് പാർട്ടിക്കിൾസ് (WIMPs) എന്ന സാങ്കല്പിക കണം ആകണം തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന ബിൽഡിംഗ് ബ്ലോക്ക് എന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു.^[9] ഇതിനെ കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള നിരവധി പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടും ഇതുവരെ ഇത്തരം കണങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ സാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.^[10] പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ കാണുന്ന തമോദ്രവ്യത്തെ അതിന്റെ 'വേഗത'(കൂടുതൽ കൃത്യമായി പറഞ്ഞാൽ അതിന്റെ ഫ്രീ സ്ട്രീമിംഗ് സ്ട്രെങ്ത്) അനുസരിച്ച് തണുത്തത്, ഊഷ്മളം, ചൂടുള്ളത് എന്നിങ്ങനെ പലതായി വിഭജിയ്ക്കാം. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കണക്കുകൂട്ടൽ പ്രകാരം തണുത്ത തമോദ്രവ്യം ആണ് പ്രധാനമായും പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിൽ ഉള്ളത്.^[11][12]

തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ പരികല്പന പൊതുവെ ശാസ്ത്രസമൂഹത്തിന് സ്വീകാര്യമാണെങ്കിലും ചില ജ്യോതിർഭൗതിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞർ^[13] വിശ്വസിയ്ക്കുന്നത് തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ നിലനിൽപ്പ് അത് ഏതു ഭൗതികപ്രശ്നങ്ങൾക്ക് പരിഹാരമായി നിർദ്ദേശിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടോ അവയെല്ലാത്തിനേയും പൂർണമായി വിശദീകരിയ്ക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നാണ്.^[14] പുതിയ ഒരു തരം ദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ പരികല്പന കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നതിന് പകരം നിലവിലുള്ള ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണസിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ (സാമാന്യ ആപേക്ഷികതാസിദ്ധാന്തം) മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തിയെടുക്കണം എന്നാണിവർ വാദിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. ഇങ്ങനെ വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടുത്തിയെടുത്ത പുതിയ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ ആണ് മോഡിഫൈഡ് ന്യൂട്ടോണിയൻ ഡയനാമിൿസ്(MOND), ടെൻസർ-വെക്റ്റർ-സ്കാലർ ഗ്രാവിറ്റി(TeVeS), എൻട്രോപ്പിക് ഗ്രാവിറ്റി തുടങ്ങിയവ. ഈ തിയറികൾ പുതിയ തരം കണികകകളോ ദ്രവ്യമോ ഒന്നും കൂടാതെ നിലവിലുള്ള നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾ വിശദീകരിയ്ക്കാൻ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.^[15] പക്ഷേ അവയ്ക്കും പലവിധം പരിമിതികൾ ഉണ്ട്.

ചരിത്രം

ദൃഷ്ടിയ്ക്കും ശാസ്ത്രോപകരണങ്ങൾക്കും ദൃശ്യമാവാത്ത, എന്നാൽ മറ്റു വസ്തുക്കളിൽ ഗുരുത്വാകർഷണ സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തുന്ന വസ്തുക്കളെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആശയത്തിന് വളരെ പഴക്കമുണ്ട്.^[16] 1884 ൽ ലോർഡ് കെൽ‌വിൻ ആകാശഗംഗയെ ഒരു വാതകമായി ഉപമിച്ച് നടത്തിയ ചില പഠനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഇത്തരം കാണാദ്രവ്യങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒരു ആശയം മുന്നോട്ടു വെച്ചിരുന്നു.^[17] 1901 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ട ഈ പഠനത്തിൽ താരാപഥത്തിന്റെ പിണ്ഡം കണക്കാക്കിയ അദ്ദേഹം ഇത് കാണാവുന്ന നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ പിണ്ഡവുമായി ഒത്തുനോക്കുമ്പോൾ ചേർന്നു പോകുന്നില്ല എന്നു കണ്ടെത്തി. അതിനാൽ ഇതിനെ പരിഹരിയ്ക്കാനായി ഇത്തരം ധാരാളം അദൃശ്യമായ വസ്തുക്കൾ ഉണ്ടാകണം എന്ന നിഗമനത്തിലെത്തി.^[18][19][20] 1906 ൽ ഹെൻറി പോയിൻകാരെ "ദി മിൽകിവേ ആൻഡ് ദി തിയറി ഓഫ് ഗ്യാസസ്" എന്ന തന്റെ പ്രബന്ധത്തിൽ കെൽവിന്റെ പഠനത്തെ പരാമർശിയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.^[21][20]

എന്നാൽ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ വേഗതയെ അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തിയുള്ള പഠനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം അദൃശ്യമായ ദ്രവ്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ആശയം ആദ്യം നിർദ്ദേശിച്ചത് 1922 ൽ ഡച്ച് ജ്യോതിഃശ്ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ജാകോബസ് കാപ്റ്റെയിൻ ആണ്.^[22][23] 1932 ൽ മറ്റൊരു ഡച്ച് ജ്യോതിഃശ്ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ജാൻ ഊർട് ലോക്കൽ ഗ്രൂപ്പിലെ താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ ചലനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും വീണ്ടും ഇതേ നിഗമനത്തിലെത്തി.^[23][24][25] എന്നാൽ പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അളവുകൾ തെറ്റാണെന്ന് സ്ഥിരീകരിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[26]

1933 ൽ സ്വിസ് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ ഫ്രിറ്റ്സ് സ്വിക്കിയും താരാപഥസമൂഹങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പഠിച്ച് സമാനമായ ഒരു നിഗമനത്തിൽ എത്തിയിരുന്നു.^[27][28][29] ഇത്തരം സമൂഹങ്ങളിലെ താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ വേഗതയെപ്പറ്റി പഠിച്ച അദ്ദേഹം ഈ താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ അവയുടെ പിണ്ഡം കണക്കാക്കിയാൽ ഇത്തരം ഉയർന്ന വേഗത സാധ്യമല്ല എന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തി. ഇതിനെ തരണം ചെയ്യാനായി അദ്ദേഹം ഡുൻക്ൽ മാറ്റെറീ (dunkle Materie / dark matter) എന്നൊരു അദൃശ്യദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ ആശയം കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. തമോദ്രവ്യം എന്ന ആശയത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഉപയോഗം ഇതാണെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.^[30] എന്നാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇത്തരം ദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ അളവിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള കണക്കുകൾ വളരെ കൂടുതൽ ആണെന്ന് പിന്നീട് തെളിഞ്ഞു.^[31]

താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രവേഗങ്ങളുടെ വിതരണത്തെപ്പറ്റി പഠിച്ച്‌ 1939 ൽ ഹോറസ് ബാബോക് താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ പ്രകാശവും പിണ്ഡവും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധത്തിൽ ചില അപാകതകൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു നാഴികക്കല്ല്. എന്നാൽ താരാപഥത്തിന്റെ ഉള്ളിൽ തന്നെ പ്രകാശം വിസരിച്ചു പോകുന്നതിനാലാകാം ഈ വ്യത്യാസം എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം കരുതി. തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ സാധ്യത അദ്ദേഹം പരിഗണിച്ചില്ല.^[32][33][34]

1970 കൾ

വേര റൂബിനും കെന്റ് ഫോർഡും 1960 കളിലും 70 കളിലും താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രവേഗത്തിന്റെ വിതരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു നടത്തിയ വിശദമായ പഠനങ്ങൾ നേരത്തെ കണ്ട അപാകതകൾക്ക് വ്യക്തമായ തെളിവുകൾ നൽകി.^[35][36][37] ആധുനികമായ ഒരു സ്‌പെക്ട്രോഗ്രാഫ് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് റൂബിൻ സർപ്പിളാകൃതിയിലുള്ള താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ അരികുകളിലുള്ള നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ വേഗതകളുടെ വിശദമായ പഠനം നടത്തി.^[37] 1978 ൽ ഈ പഠനങ്ങൾ സ്ഥിരീകരിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[38] 1980 ൽ ഇവരുടെ പ്രബന്ധത്തെ അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തി മറ്റൊരു സുപ്രധാന പ്രബന്ധം പുറത്തുവന്നു.^[39] അവരുടെ നിഗമനപ്രകാരം ഓരോ താരാപഥത്തിലും കാണാവുന്ന പിണ്ഡത്തിന്റെ ആറു മടങ്ങെങ്കിലും അധികം പിണ്ഡം ഉണ്ടായാലേ ഇത്തരം താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെ നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ വേഗത വിശദീകരിയ്ക്കാൻ സാധിയ്ക്കുകയുള്ളൂ. അങ്ങനെ 1980 ഓടെ തമോദ്രവ്യം പോലെ ഒന്ന് പരിഹരിയ്‌ക്കേണ്ട ഒരു കൂട്ടം പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ജ്യോതിഃശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടെന്ന് വ്യക്തമായി സ്ഥാപിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[35]

റൂബിന്റെയും ഫോർഡിന്റെയും പഠനങ്ങൾ ഗ്യാലക്സികളുടെ ദൃശ്യവർണരാജിയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഏതാണ്ട് ഇതേ സമയത്ത് തന്നെ റേഡിയോ ദൂരദർശിനികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നമ്മുടെ സമീപ താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെ അറ്റോമിക് ഹൈഡ്രജന്റെ സ്പെക്ട്രം പരിശോധിയ്ക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമങ്ങളും നടന്നിരുന്നു. നക്ഷത്രാന്തരീയ മാദ്ധ്യമത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന അറ്റോമിക് ഹൈഡ്രജൻ (HI) താരാപഥത്തിന്റെ ദൃശ്യമായ ഡിസ്‌ക്കിനും വളരെ അധികം ദൂരത്തിൽ വരെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇവയുടെ വേഗത അളക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ഒരു താരാപഥത്തിന്റെ വേഗതാവിതരണം വളരെ വലിയൊരു പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ പഠിയ്ക്കാൻ സാധിയ്ക്കും.^[40][41] ഗ്രീൻ ബാങ്കിലെ 300 അടി ദൂരദർശിനി^[42], ജോഡ്റെൽ'ലെ 250 അടി ദൂരദർശിനി^[43] തുടങ്ങിയവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ആൻഡ്രോമീഡ ഗ്യാലക്സിയുടെ അറ്റോമിക് ഹൈഡ്രജൻ സ്പെക്ട്രം സംബന്ധിച്ച പഠനങ്ങൾ താരാപഥകേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും വളരെ ദൂരെയുള്ള നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ വേഗത കെപ്ളേറിയൻ പ്രവചനത്തെക്കാൾ വളരെ കൂടുതലാണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിരുന്നു.

കൂടുതൽ കൃത്യതയുള്ള റീസിവറുകളുടെ ആവിർഭാവത്തോടെ ആൻഡ്രോമീഡയുടെ വർത്തുളപ്രവേഗം ഏറ്റവും പുറമെയുള്ള 10 കിലോപാർസെക് വലയത്തിൽ (അതായത് കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും 20 മുതൽ 30 കിലോപാർസെക് വരെയുള്ള ദൂരങ്ങളിൽ) ഏതാണ്ട് സ്ഥിരമായി നിൽക്കുന്നു എന്ന് തെളിയിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[44][45] മോർട്ടൻ റോബെർട്സ്, റോബർട്ട് വൈറ്റ്ഹേഴ്സ്റ്റ് എന്നിവർ ദൃശ്യസ്രോതസ്സുകളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഡാറ്റയും റേഡിയോ ദൂരദർശിനികളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഡാറ്റയും ഒരുമിച്ച് ചേർത്ത് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ഒരു പ്രബന്ധത്തിലാണ് ഈ പഠനം പുറത്തുവന്നത്. ഇതിലെ ചിത്രം 16 ൽ^[44] കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും 15 കിലോപാർസെക് വരെ ദൂരത്തിലുള്ളത് ദൃശ്യസ്രോതസ്സിൽ നിന്നുള്ള ഡാറ്റയും 20 മുതൽ 30 കിലോപാർസെക് വരെയുള്ളത് റേഡിയോ സ്രോതസ്സിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള അറ്റോമിക് ഹൈഡ്രജൻ ഡാറ്റയുമാണ്. ഇതിൽ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് അകന്നുപോകുന്തോറും നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ പ്രവേഗം ഏതാണ്ട് 10 കിലോ പാർസെക് ദൂരം വരെ കൂടി വരികയും അതിനുശേഷം സ്ഥിരമായി നിൽക്കുന്നതായി കാണുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇതിനുപുറമെ കൂടുതൽ മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട ഇന്റർഫെറോമെട്രിക് എക്സ്ട്രാ ഗാലക്ടിക് സ്‌പെക്‌ട്രോസ്കോപ്പി സങ്കേതം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് 1972 ൽ ഡേവിഡ് റോഗ്സ്റ്റാഡ്, സേഥ് ഷോസ്റ്റാക് എന്നിവർ അഞ്ച് വ്യത്യസ്ത സർപ്പിളാകൃതീയ താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ ഗാലക്ടിക് വെലോസിറ്റി കർവുകൾ വരച്ചതിൽ നിന്നും കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് പോകുന്തോറും നിവർന്നു തന്നെ കിടക്കുന്ന കർവുകളുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം സംശയാതീതമായി തെളിയിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[46][18][47]

ഗ്യാലക്സി ക്ലസ്റ്ററുകളുടെ ഗ്രാവിറ്റേഷനൽ ലെൻസിംഗിന്റെ പഠനങ്ങൾ^[48], താരാപഥങ്ങളിലെയും ക്ലസ്റ്ററുകളിലെയും ചൂടുവാതകങ്ങളുടെ താപവിതരണം, കോസ്മിക് പശ്ചാത്തല വികിരണത്തിലെ അസമതകൾ തുടങ്ങിയ വിവിധ സ്രോതസ്സുകളിലൂടെ എൺപതുകളിൽ തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത വീണ്ടും വ്യക്തമായി. ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടെത്താനാകാത്ത ഒരു മൗലികകണമാണ് തമോദ്രവ്യത്തിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന ബിൽഡിംഗ് ബ്ലോക്കുകൾ എന്നാണ് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരുടെ അഭിപ്രായം.^[9][49] പരമാണു ഭൗതികത്തിലെ ഇന്നത്തെ ഒരു സുപ്രധാന ഗവേഷണം ഈ കണത്തെ കണ്ടുപിടിയ്ക്കാനാണ്.^[10]

സാങ്കേതിക നിർവ്വചനം

പ്രപഞ്ചവിജ്ഞാനീയത്തിൽ സ്കെയിൽ ഫാക്ടറിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ഘാതത്തിന് വിപരീതമായി ഊർജസാന്ദ്രത (energy density) വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടുന്നതാണ് ദ്രവ്യം (ρ ∝ a⁻³). എന്നാൽ വികിരണത്തിന്റെ ഊർജസാന്ദ്രത വ്യത്യാസപ്പെടുന്നത് സ്കെയിൽ ഫാക്ടറിന്റെ നാലാം ഘാതത്തിന് വിപരീതമായാണ്(ρ ∝ a⁻⁴). തമോ ഊർജ്ജത്തിന്റേത് സ്കെയിൽ ഫാക്ടറിനെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് മാറുന്നതേയില്ല(ρ ∝ a⁰).^[50]

സാധാരണ ദ്രവ്യമല്ലാത്ത, എന്നാൽ ഊർജസാന്ദ്രത സ്കെയിൽ ഫാക്ടറിന്റെ മൂന്നാം ഘാതത്തിനനുസരിച്ച് കുറയുന്നതെന്തോ അതാണ് തമോദ്രവ്യം.^[51]

ഒരു സർപ്പിളാകൃത ഗ്യാലക്സിയുടെ റോടേഷൻ കർവ്. A എന്നത് പ്രവചിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ട കർവും B എന്നത് നിരീക്ഷിയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ട കർവും ആണ്.

ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഡിസ്ക് ടൈപ്പ് ഗ്യാലക്സികളുടെ ഇന്നത്തെ മാതൃകയും 10 ബില്യൺ കൊല്ലം മുൻപുള്ള മാതൃകയും. ഇന്നത്തെ മാതൃകയിൽ ചുവന്ന നിറത്തിൽ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത് തമോദ്രവ്യം ആണ്.

സർപ്പിളാകൃത താരാപഥങ്ങളുടെ വാലുകൾ അവയുടെ മധ്യത്തിലുള്ള പിണ്ഡത്തിനുചുറ്റും ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. അവയുടെ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് പോകുംതോറും ദൃശ്യമായ പിണ്ഡത്തിന്റെ സാന്ദ്രത കുറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിയിരിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ദൃശ്യമായ പിണ്ഡം മാത്രമാണ് ഇവയുടെ ചലനത്തെ സ്വാധീനിയ്ക്കുന്നതെങ്കിൽ നമുക്ക് ഇവയെ സൗരയൂഥത്തിന്റെ മാതൃകയാക്കി മോഡൽ ചെയ്യാവുന്നതാണ്. കെപ്ലറുടെ ഗ്രഹചലനനിയമങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് പോകുന്തോറും കേന്ദ്രത്തെച്ചുറ്റിയുള്ള നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളുടെ വേഗത കുറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരിയ്ക്കണം. എന്നാൽ ഇത്തരം ഒരു വേഗതക്കുറവ് ഇതുവരെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടില്ല.^[52] ഇതുവരെ ലഭ്യമായ ഡാറ്റ വെച്ച് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ കേന്ദ്രത്തിൽ നിന്നും അകന്നുപോകുന്തോറും അവയുടെ വേഗത സ്ഥിരമായാണ് കാണുന്നത്. കെപ്ലർ നിയമം ശരിയാകണമെങ്കിൽ നമുക്ക് കാണാവുന്ന ദ്രവ്യത്തിനുപുറമെ മറ്റൊരു തരം ദ്രവ്യവും ഇത്തരം താരാപഥങ്ങളിൽ വേണം. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ഗ്യാലക്സികളുടെ അരികുകളിൽ.
