മംഗോൾ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥാപകനും ആദ്യത്തെ ഗ്രേറ്റ് ഖാനും (ഭരണാനാധികാരി) ചക്രവർത്തിയും ആയിരുന്നു മംഗോൾ വംശജനായ ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ (മംഗോളിയായ്:чингис хаан). ആദ്യനാമം തെമുജിൻഅഥവാ തെമുചിൻ (കൊല്ലൻ എന്നർത്ഥം[2]) എന്നായിരുന്നു. സമീപസ്ഥങ്ങളായ പ്രദേശങ്ങളെ മാത്രം ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്ന ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സാമ്രാജ്യമായിരുന്നു മംഗോൾ സാമ്രാജ്യം. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മരണശേഷം ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സാമ്രാജ്യമായി ഇത് മാറി. സാമ്രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിച്ചതിനുശേഷം സാർവത്രിക ഭരണാധികാരി എന്നർത്ഥമുള്ള ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ എന്ന നാമധേയം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചതിന് ശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം ആരംഭിച്ച മംഗോളിയൻ ആക്രമണങ്ങൾ യുറേഷ്യയുടെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും കീഴടക്കി, പടിഞ്ഞാറ് പോളണ്ടിലേക്കും മിഡിൽ ഈസ്റ്റിലെ ലെവന്റിലേക്കും എത്തി.

തെമുചിൻ എന്നായിരുന്നു ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാന്റെ ആദ്യ നാമം. തന്റെ 44-ആം വയസിലാണ് തെമൂചിൻ, ഓങ്ഖാനെ സ്ഥാനഭ്രഷ്ടനാക്കി ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ എന്ന പേരിൽ മംഗോളിയൻ വംശജരുടെ നേതാവായത്.[3] വടക്ക് കിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിലെ പല പ്രാകൃതഗോത്രങ്ങളെ ഏകീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് 1206-ൽ ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ എല്ലാ മംഗോളിയരുടേയും അധിപനായി (ഖാൻ). ഉടൻ തന്നെ ചൈനയടക്കം സമീപദേശങ്ങളിലെ ഇതരജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളെ കീഴടക്കാനായി ചെങ്കിസ്ഖാൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടു[2]. ഖാൻ ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതിനു ശേഷം ഏഷ്യയുടെ കിഴക്ക്, മദ്ധ്യ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേക്ക് അധിനിവേശം നടത്തിക്കൊണ്ട് ആക്രമണോത്സുകമായ ഒരു വിദേശനയം പിന്തുടർന്നു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഏഷ്യയിലെ ഭൂരിഭാഗം പ്രദേശങ്ങളും മംഗോൾ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ കീഴിലായി.
1218-ൽ ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാന്റെ സ്ഥാനപതിയെ മദ്ധ്യേഷ്യയിലെ ഭരണാധികാരികളായിരുന്ന സെൽജ്യൂക്കുകൾ വകവരുത്തി. മംഗോളിയരുമായി കച്ചവടം നടത്തിയതിന് 450 കച്ചവടക്കാരുടെ തലവെട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. 2 വർഷത്തിനുള്ളിൽ ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ ബുഖാറയിലെത്തുകയും 30,000-ത്തോളം പേരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കി തന്റെ ദൂതന്റെ കൊലക്ക് പകവീട്ടി. മദ്ധ്യേഷ്യക്ക് പുറമേ കിഴക്കൻ യൂറോപ്പ്, റഷ്യയുടെ ഭാഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലേക്കും ചെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ തന്റെ അധികാരം വ്യാപിപ്പിച്ചു. പട്ടുപാതയുടെ വാണിജ്യപ്രാധാന്യം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ അദ്ദേഹം, അതിനെ ഒരു സുരക്ഷിതപാതയാക്കി മാറ്റുകയും ഇടത്താവളങ്ങൾ നിർമ്മിച്ച് തപാൽ സൗകര്യം ആരംഭിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[4]
ടാംഗുടുകളെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്തിയശേഷം 1227ൽ ജെങ്കിസ് ഖാൻ മരണമടഞ്ഞു. ജന്മദേശമായ മംഗോളിയയിൽ എവിടെയോ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ അടക്കം ചെയ്തു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിൻഗാമികൾ യൂറേഷ്യയുടെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും ആധുനിക ചൈനയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന മുഴുവൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളും ആധുനിക റഷ്യ, തെക്കൻ ഏഷ്യ, കിഴക്കൻ യൂറോപ്പ്, മദ്ധ്യ പൗരസ്ത്യ ദേശം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രദേശങ്ങളും കീഴടക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് മംഗോൾ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തെ വ്യാപിപ്പിച്ചു.
